En una novelita corta, rápida Andre Maurois describe la vida - tribulación de Bernardo Quesnay en la Francia de a partir de 1919. Narra como desde un comienzo escéptico, Bernardo termina heredando la fabrica de su abuelo Aquiles, como la fábrica empieza a configurar su mundo dejando de lado el amor y su aventura con Simona y un escarceo con la cuñada. Vamos que el trabajo es mas importante que el amor para el, al contrario que su hermano Antonio.

Cositas que se apuntan vs a una historiografía más oficial:

• Moros: una cosa es tenerlos presentes y otra hacerlos funcionar como explicación de todo. Considerar a los Moros como elemento "civilizado" frente a la tosquedad y primitivismos de España cristiano ... pues es discutible. (Se venia da la Hispania romana)
  
• La Inquisición: es muy similar a tribunales eclesiásticos o seculares de la Europa del tiempo. El numero de víctimas mucho menor que el de las luchas religiosas en Francia, Alemania o Inglaterra. Vamos que bárbaros lo justo.
• Destrucción de las Indias: España mas que destructor ha sido constructor al estilo Roma.
• La Decadencia: ... desde Carlos V ... no puede ser que España este decayendo desde el s XV!
  
• Mosaico: España no es una nación, es un mosaico ... pues después de ser la primera nación europea en el sentido moderno de la palabra, inventora de la nación como forma política y social ... pues va a ser que no!
